Nigeria moves up one spot in global passport ranking

Although the rating marks a slight improvement for Nigeria’s global image, travel access for citizens remains restricted, with the country retaining visa-free access to only 45 nations—the same as last year.

Nigeria was ranked 91st alongside Ethiopia and Myanmar, two countries battling incursions from armed groups, according to the Henley Passport Index for 2025. The Henley Passport Index is updated monthly based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA).

 

In Africa, the Nigerian passport was ranked above only a few, including those from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia, making it the seventh least desirable travel document from Africa. In 2024, it was the sixth.

The rating comes as Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, said the ministry had succeeded in redeeming Nigeria’s image abroad. "The next stage is to exalt and glorify Nigeria’s image," the minister said at a ministerial press briefing in Abuja, recounting how the ministry negotiated the release of wrongfully imprisoned Nigerians in unnamed countries.

Tuggar did not clarify how the ministry would achieve this goal but noted that the country was committed to applying ethical considerations in implementing its foreign policy while liaising with other nations.

 

In July 2023, Nigeria was ranked 90th on the global passport list but later fell to 97th, below African countries like Burundi, Cameroon, and Liberia, reflecting a significant shift in the nation’s visa policy. The passport later made a comeback in 2024, climbing to the 92nd spot.

 

Meanwhile, Seychelles retained its position as the most favoured African passport, improving its ranking to 22nd—two spots higher than the previous year—with access to 156 countries. Singapore remained the most powerful passport with access to 193 nations, while Afghanistan held last place with access to just 25 countries.

Tinubu: Full text of President Tinubu’s Declaration of State Of Emergency In Rivers State

Nigerian President,  Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State amid the ongoing political crisis. 

 

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18/3/2025,  Nigeria's President Tinubu announced the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all 27 elected members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

‘’Fellow Nigerians, I feel greatly disturbed at the turn we have come to regarding the political crisis in Rivers State. Like many of you, I have watched with concern the development with the hope that the parties involved would allow good sense to prevail at the soonest, but all that hope burned out without any solution to the crisis.

With the crisis persisting, there is no way democratic governance, which we have all fought and worked for over the years, can thrive in a way that will redound to the benefit of the good people of the state. The state has been at a standstill since the crisis started, with the good people of the state not being able to have access to the dividends of democracy.

Also, it is public knowledge that the Governor of Rivers State for unjustifiable reasons, demolished the House of Assembly of the state as far back as 13th December 2023 and has, up until now, fourteen (14) months after, not rebuilt same. I have made personal interventions between the contending parties for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, but my efforts have been largely ignored by the parties to the crisis. I am also aware that many well-meaning Nigerians, Leaders of thought and Patriotic groups have also intervened at various times with the best of intentions to resolve the matter, but all their efforts were also to no avail. Still, I thank them.

On February 28, 2025, the supreme court, in a judgment in respect of about eight consolidated appeals concerning the political crisis in Rivers State, based on several grave unconstitutional acts and disregard of rule of law that have been committed by the Governor of Rivers State as shown by the evidence before it pronounced in very clear terms:

“a government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended. In this case the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is there is no government in Rivers State.”

The above pronouncement came after a catalogue of judicial findings of constitutional breaches against the Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Going Forward in their judgment, and having found and held that 27 members of the House who had allegedly defected

“are still valid members of Rivers State House of Assembly and cannot be prevented from participating in the proceedings of that House by the 8th Respondent (that is, the Governor) in cohorts with four members”

The Supreme Court then made some orders to restore the state to immediate constitutional democracy. These orders include the immediate passing of an Appropriation Bill by the Rivers State House of Assembly which up till now has not been facilitated.

Some militants had threatened fire and brimstone against their perceived enemy of the governor who has up till now NOT disowned them.

Apart from that both the House and the governor have not been able to work together.

Both of them do not realise that they are in office to work together for the peace and good governance of the state.

The latest security reports made available to me show that between yesterday and today there have been disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militant without the governor taking any action to curtail them. I have, of course given stern order to the security agencies to ensure safety of lives of the good people of Rivers State and the oil pipelines.

With all these and many more, no good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which no doubt requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security.

In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do.Nigerian home decor ideas

By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.

In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State. For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with their constitutional mandate.

The Administrator will not make any new laws. He will, however, be free to formulate regulations as may be found necessary to do his job, but such regulations will need to be considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council and promulgated by the President for the state.

This declaration has been published in the Federal Gazette, a copy of which has been forwarded to the National Assembly in accordance with the Constitution. It is my fervent hope that this inevitable intervention will help to restore peace and order in Rivers State by awakening all the contenders to the constitutional imperatives binding on all political players in Rivers State in particular and Nigeria as a whole.Nigerian home decor ideas

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi central, has said that the Nigerian senate is like a “cult” and senators do not express contrary views for fear of retaliation. 

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is one of only four women in the 109-member Senate, said this in an interview with the BBC. 

The female lawmaker had accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexually harassing her. 

She was suspended from the senate on March 6 for “gross misconduct” following her seating arrangement altercation with Akpabio. 

“I am being victimised. My suspension is a means of silencing me,” she told BBC host, Yemisi Adegoke. 

“It was episode after episode, moment after moment. We were at his country home. He was taking me around his house. My husband was walking behind us. He held my hand. 

“He then squeezed my hands in a very suggestive way. We women, we know what it means when a man squeezes our hands in a suggestive way. 

“And he went, ‘now that you’re in the senate, I’ll make an opportunity for us to come here and have a good moment’, you know, along that line.” 

Asked if Akpabio ever made any advances towards her in the chamber or the senate, she said: “There was a time when I rushed to work forgetting to wear my ring, there were about five senators there. He said, ‘Oh Natasha, you are not wearing your ring, is this an invitation to treat?’ You know, statements like this.” 

Responding to the interview, Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the senate’s deputy chief whip, told the BBC that there was never a time Akpabio made sexual advances towards Akpoti-Uduaghan. 

He also said the senate president never made any inappropriate comments towards the female lawmaker whether in his country home or the senate chamber. 

Nwaebonyi also rejected Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim that the senate is trying to silence her. 

“Senator Natasha’s legislative activities show this claim is not true,” he said.

Shocking! A Pregnant teenager murd£red by womb raider who sl@shed her open to steal her unborn baby before burying her

This is so heartbreaking 💔 

Sadly! A pregnant 16-year-old was slashed open by a barbaric k!ller to steal her baby and claim it as her own. 

Emilly Sena, who was nine months pregnant, was found Thursday, buried in the backyard of a home in the Brazilian city of Cuiabá. 

She had been lured to the residence with the promise of receiving baby clothes donated by Nataly Pereira, 25, who later confessed to the horrific murd£r. 

Once inside the home, Sena was attacked and k!lled by hanging before a sharp object was used to remove the baby from her womb. 

An expert told Brazilian outlet G1 that Sena had cuts that resembled a "T" on her stomach and that she was alive when her baby was forcibly taken.  
 

 

Sena was found buried in a shallow grave in the home's backyard with wires wrapped around her neck. 
 

Pereira's husband, Christian de Arruda, 28, reportedly believed his wife was pregnant and was unaware of the murd£r. 
 

He even posted a photo of the child on social media to announce he had become a father.

De Arruda met Pereira Thursday, March 13, at Santa Helena Hospital, where they attempted to register the child as their own. 

Hospital staff became suspicious when they noticed that Pereira was clean and not bleeding after claiming that she had gone into labor at her home. 

Medical personnel took in the baby and then provided care to Pereira, who underwent testing that exposed her lie. 

Pereira, already a mother-of-three, told investigators that she had suffered two consecutive miscarriages. 

"She had lost a baby about six months ago. This would be the second time she had had a miscarriage and so she decided to maintain this false pregnancy," her lawyers said, according to G1.  

"According to calculations, this daughter she had lost would have been born during this period." 

Pereira had invited the pregnant teen to her brother-in-law's home on Wednesday, March 12, offering to donate baby clothing and a crib accessory. Pereira told Sena not to bring the unborn child's father, text messages showed. 

The teen's mother, Ana Meridiane, told the outlet that her daughter had communicated via social media with Pereira, who claimed to be a mother who was expecting another child.  

"She said she had received a lot of clothes and wanted to donate some to Emilly," the mother said.  

Authorities initially arrested Pereira's husband, her brother-in-law and another man, but all three were released from custody Friday morning, March 14, after Pereira confessed to acting alone.  

Caio Alexandre, chief of Mato Grosso Civil Police Homicide and Persona Protection Department in Cuiabá, told reporters that the three individuals were still under investigation. 

"The investigation is still on site to find out the dynamics of what happened, where the mother was restrained inside the house, to see traces of the blood, so we can understand where the aggression against her began until it escalates to the dumping point," Alexandre said. 

He noted that knives were found at the scene.

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert’s divorce settlement has been finalized, and the terms are making headlines. 

After years of marriage, the couple, who separated in 2023, reached a legally binding agreement in June 2024. 

Taylor, who was married to the former Brooklyn Nets player for eight years, is set to receive four luxury homes valued at over $10 million, a one-time seven-figure payment, and various luxury vehicles, including a $300,000 Maybach, a $70,000 Mercedes Sprinter, and a tour bus. Taylor will also maintain full ownership of her businesses – “Taylormade” and “The Aunties” – according to legal documents obtained by The Jasmine Brand. 

In addition to the financial settlement, Shumpert is required to pay $8,000 per month in child support for the couple’s two daughters. He will also cover their private school tuition costs, ensuring that their children will be well-provided for. 

Meanwhile, Iman, a former NBA champion, will keep his Miami condo and residencies in South Georgia and Decatur. He will also retain his portion of investments in their business ventures, although it has not been revealed exactly what those investments are. 

Despite their separation, Taylor has maintained a cordial relationship with Shumpert, emphasizing that there was no infidelity involved in their split. 

On Instagram, she posted, "In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure." 

She also assured her followers that she and Shumpert remain close, saying, "We are still the best of friends, great business partners, and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our two beautiful children."

A Nigerian Barrister and human rights activist, Toyin Ndidi Taiwo-Ojo, has rescued a 23-year-old woman allegedly brutalized by her boyfriend.

 

 

Toyin, who disclosed this in a Facebook post on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, said the victim's boyfriend and father of her child allegedly constantly battered her even three weeks after she gave birth. 

 

 

"The rescue I went on today was successful. Just rescued a 23 year old young lady who was being beaten blue and black by her boyfriend who she has a child for," the lawyer wrote.

 

Abandoned by the father, the mother has been bought over by the little stipends she was getting from the yeye man and will always tell her to go back anytime she runs home to her because of the violence.

According to the survivor, he will beat her to the extent that she would be bleeding and when he calms down he will begin to beg for her forgiveness, he has beaten her uncountable times and even beat her when she was just three weeks postpartum.

X Owner Elon Musk claims someone in Ukraine is behind 'massive' cyberattack that took down his social media app X

The CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk has claimed Ukraine is behind the devastating cyberattack that took down his social media app X.

 

This comes after the social media platform suffered repeated glitches on Monday, March 10.

Well, we're not sure exactly what happened,' Musk told Fox Business Network on Monday afternoon

 

'But there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.'

 

 

Musk had confirmed earlier in the day that X was being targeted by a ‘massive cyberattack.’ The world's richest man noted during the interview that the social media site is now back up and running.

 

 

His statement came after the platform had been down for users worldwide. They had complained about issues with the app and website since as early as 5:30am ET.

 

 

Musk shared on X that the hack involved so many resources that he believes it could only be the work of a 'coordinated group' or a foreign country.

 

He did not offer any other details on the attack which has impacted the app's 600 million active monthly users. 

 

 

It came amid hostile relations between Kyiv and Washington. Last month, President Donald Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky a 'dictator.'

 

Zelensky was accused by Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance, of warmongering, not wanting to make peace, and not being grateful enough for U.S. military and financial support during an Oval Office meeting.

 

 

He was expelled from the White House and a proposed minerals deal between Washington and Kyiv remained unsigned.

 

 

While Republicans in the U.S. supported Trump's actions and criticized Zelensky's behavior, the encounter led to backlash in Ukraine.

 

In the aftermath, Musk branded Zelensky 'evil' and accused him of pushing a 'forever war' with Russia.

 

 

Musk said at the time: 'Zelensky wants a forever war, a never-ending graft meat grinder. This is evil.'

 

 

In October, Musk called for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, and added: 'We are sleepwalking our way into World War III with one foolish decision after the other.'

 

 

On Monday, Zelensky was in Saudi Arabia to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

 

 

Talks will be held there on Tuesday between Ukrainian and U.S. officials that Washington hopes will deliver substantial progress towards ending Ukraine's war with Russia.
